Quilt Size Chart
Standard finished quilt dimensions for every bed size, crosschecked across multiple sources. Baby and throw sizes have no industry standard — ranges are given with that noted. Queen size varies by source — the caveat below explains why and what to do about it.

All dimensions are in inches. These are finished quilt top sizes — add 4–8″ overhang per side when cutting backing fabric.
⚠ Queen quilt size varies significantly between sources
The queen mattress is always 60″ × 80″. But “standard queen quilt” ranges from 90″ × 90″ to 90″ × 115″ depending on the source. The width (90″) is consistent — it gives a 15″ drop on each side. The length is what varies.
- 90″ × 95″ — covers sides only; quilt ends near the foot of the mattress (no foot drop)
- 90″ × 108″ — covers sides and provides a 14″ foot drop; traditional coverlet length
What to do: measure your specific bed — mattress depth varies from 8″ (thin) to 16″ (thick pillow-top). Add overhang to taste. Use the quilt backing calculator once you have your finished quilt dimensions.
How to calculate your quilt size
Start with the mattress dimensions, then add your desired drop on each side:
Width = mattress width + (drop × 2)
Length = mattress length + pillow tuck (optional 8–10″) + foot drop
A typical drop for a bed quilt is 10–16″ per side. For a quilt you intend to tuck under the pillow, add 8–10″ to the length. For a quilt that just covers the top of the mattress (no drop), use mattress dimensions directly.
Quilt size FAQ
What is the standard queen quilt size?▼
There is no single standard. The queen mattress is always 60" × 80", but how much overhang you add determines the quilt size. A conservative quilt (side drop only, no foot drop) runs about 90" × 95". A traditional quilt with a full drop on all sides runs 90" × 108" or larger. The 13" length difference is real — always measure your bed before cutting fabric.
How much bigger should a quilt be than the mattress?▼
For a bed quilt you want covered sides, add 10–16 inches to the mattress width (5–8 inches per side). For length, add 10–20 inches depending on how much foot drop you want and whether you fold the top down for a pillow tuck. For a couch throw, no overhang is needed. What is the difference between a throw and a lap quilt?▼
The terms are used interchangeably. A throw or lap quilt typically runs 50"×65" to 60"×72" — large enough to cover an adult on a sofa but not sized for a bed. There is no industry standard.
Do quilt sizes account for shrinkage after washing?▼
Dimensions like these are finished quilt sizes. Quilts can shrink 2–4 inches after the first wash-and-dry cycle, depending on whether you pre-washed your fabric. If you pre-wash all your fabrics and batting before sewing, the finished quilt will hold close to its target dimensions.
How many quilt blocks do I need for a queen size quilt?▼
It depends on your block size. A queen quilt around 90" × 108" made from 12" finished blocks would need 7.5 × 9 blocks — round up to 8 × 9 = 72 blocks. For 6" blocks: 15 × 18 = 270 blocks. For 10" blocks: 9 × 10.8 — round to 9 × 11 = 99 blocks. Always add one extra row in each direction so you have flexibility when squaring up.
